September 7-8 || Get to know your child’s teachers

As your children head back to school, make it a priority to meet all their teachers in person if you can. Many of us get to know our child’s classroom teacher easily, through back-to-school night, or parent-teacher conferences. But you should become familiar with all the adults that your child will spend a portion of their day with — art, science and special subject teachers, cafeteria workers, etc. To continue to keep our children safe, knowing the adults who are taking care of them is a great first step. Conozca a los maestros de su hijo

September 14-15 || Consider rules around school devices

If your child is using a tablet, iPad, or phone for school this year, you need to be aware of what they can access online. While many school devices may have safety controls in place, children are pretty creative, and may be able to maneuver around these safeguards. Consider making a “tech space” in your home, where all devices live when they are not in use — and make it centrally located, so you know whenever someone takes a device. Consider also having your children use their devices in the main area of the house, with supervision. September 21-22 || Shop safely with your children

When you are with your children in a crowded shopping area — think mall, grocery store, farmer’s market — it is important to have a plan of action to keep your group together and your children safe. Keep children as close as possible, ideally either in a cart or holding hands. Always go as a group to the bathroom, or at least in pairs, and have a designated spot to meet back up. September 28-29 || STAR safety for parking lots

Consider using the STAR method to keep your children safe in parking lots. The organization Connecting for Kids offers the STAR method to remind children of simple steps when they are in a parking lot. S: STOP as soon as you get out of the car. T: TOUCH a safe space on your car and do not move. A: Pay ATTENTION to the cars around you and the directions an adult gives you. R: Wait for an adult to tell you that you are READY to go! Método de seguridad STAR en los estacionamientos

Considere usar el método STAR para mantener a sus hijos seguros en los estacionamientos. La organización Connecting for Kids recomienda usar el método STAR para recordarles a los niños pasos simples cuando están en un estacionamiento. October 5-6 || Why are personal boundaries important?

Personal boundaries are critical for every relationship and interaction we have in ministry or volunteer work. We set boundaries to protect ourselves and the people with whom we are interacting. As an employee or volunteer in ministry, you have an inherent, perceived power over those you serve. Because of this position of authority and power, the employee and volunteer’s priority should be the best interest of the person to whom they are ministering. October 12-13 || How can you be a good witness to the faith?

Adults have a responsibility to live out the Christian message — to love one another and to do God’s will. We also have a responsibility to help children learn how to live this way. Consider your role in protecting children by showing them how to be a witness to the Faith: following rules, modeling good behaviors like helping a neighbor, wearing your seatbelt, respecting the environment. Another way to witness is listening to the children in your life and paying attention to their interests, their needs, and their worries. October 19-20 || Taking pictures or videos of a minor without permission

What can be done if a person is taking pictures of a minor in a public place? Although it is legal that a person can take pictures or videos in a public place, there are sometimes extenuating circumstances that require adults to pay more attention. Is the person taking photos acting suspiciously — focusing on only minor children, for example, or zooming in on specific body areas of their subjects? Are they hovering around groups of children with no seeming reason for being there? If you have concerns, speak up. Ask why the photos are being taken, or if the person is willing to delete the images of your child. From there, you can decide if you need to get the authorities involved. October 26-27 || Trick or treating safety

Halloween is one of the most exciting nights of the year for children, but it can be a nerve-wracking night for the parents who have to run the show. Consider a few safety tips to get your family ready for trick-or-treating. Choose bright colored costumes and give your children flashlights and/or glow sticks to make them easily visible. Visit neighborhoods you know well, with lit streets and houses. Prep your children with your cell phone number, either memorized or written down in their pockets or even on their arms, in case you get separated.
